Hyde Café and Wine Bar |
1550 Hyde St. (@ Pacific)
San Francisco, CA 94109
(415) 775-1550 |
|
 |
Website |
 |
| 1550 is one of those places that feels like a
little-known neighborhood secret, even though it
has garnered rave reviews in national foodie publications
such as Wine Spectator and Food and Wine. Nestled
into two small store-fronts on the Western side
of Russian Hill, Chef Peter Erickson offers creatively
elegant, Mediterranean-influenced meals without
the pretension that one often finds in comparable
restaurants. |

| Bix |
56 Gold St
San Francisco, CA
Phone: (415) 433-6300 |
|
 |
Website |
 |
| Perfect for a clandestine martini or a celebratory
glass of Perrier-Jouet, Bix may be the sexiest restaurant
in the city. The lights are low, the walls display
moody Art Deco paintings, and piano music plays
softly in the background. Best of all, the food
has made great strides in the past year. The menu
changes daily, but on a recent visit, heirloom tomato
salad with arugula showcased Bix`s use of California`s
freshest produce. |

| The chefs at Boulette's Larder are busy setting
the “mise en place” for your home kitchen
- a rotating repertoire of prepared ingredients
aimed to facilitate thoughtful, time saving and
seasonal cooking at home: Refrigerators full of
carefully built stocks, cleaned and prepped organic,
local vegetables, conical mounds of fresh grains
and soaked legumes, doughs, crèmes, house
made yoghurts and fresh cheese. Roasting vegetables
and simmering stews amidst the subdued charcoal
of the wood burning fireplace. |

| De
Young Museum Café |
50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in
the heart of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. |
|
 |
Website |
 |
| What you'll see on the menu at the cafe are salads,
sandwiches and grilled food, just like at many places.
But the salad greens will come from a specialty
farm in Winters, the beef in the burger is grass
fed, and the tomatoes in the soup are heirloom.
It all fits with the idea of local, sustainable
food, an idea that many in the food world are embracing
and one that de Young administrators say fits with
the museum's mission as well. |

Stagg painting of the Marin Farmer's Market commissioned
for the restaurant). Add a top-notch staff and there's
little wonder why One Market has been packed from
the first day. |

| Dominated by a wall of glass overlooking the Bay

to hold the ever-present crowds. A blue-green color
scheme plays off the waterside location, and large
tables made from cypress trees give a warm, cozy
feel to the otherwise minimalist space. Knowledgeable
servers guide diners through the menu. With his
insistence on fresh, high-quality ingredients, Chef
Charles Phan's Vietnamese-inspired menu appeals
to diners unfamiliar with Southeast Asian fare. |
